CIECH and Synthos Green Energy will be cooperating in the use of nuclear energy

CIECH S.A. companies and Synthos Green Energy S.A. have signed a letter of intent regarding their cooperation in the use of SMR (Small Modular Reactors) and MMR (Micro Modular Reactors) technology. As part of their cooperation, both entities will define, among others, the possibility to construct small or micro nuclear reactors on the premises of CIECH's production plants, and analyse possible models of energy supply under mutual agreements. The CIECH Group announced the possibility of using nuclear power during the publication of its ESG strategy in May 2021. The strategy assumes the withdrawal from the use of coal in 2033 and the attainment of climate neutrality in 2040.

The executed letter of intent will enable the CIECH Group to thoroughly analyse the use of small and micro modular reactor technology in its sodium carbonate manufacturing plants. Currently, the combined heat and power plants supplying steam – a raw material which is essential in the technological process – are using coal as a fuel. In Poland, the CIECH Group is one of the largest recipients of coal, following the commercial power industry sector. However, according to the adopted strategy, the Group is to gradually move away from this raw material in favour of energy obtained from natural gas, thermal waste processing or, as in this case, nuclear energy.

Synthos Green Energy is a strategic and exclusive partner of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas LLC in the use of small modular reactor technology (up to 300 MW), and is also involved with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation - in the area of modular micro reactors (up to 15 MW). The company is also developing its collaboration in hydrogen production with the use of nuclear micro reactors.

- Clean emission-free nuclear energy may become a crucial element of the strategy of achieving ambitious climate goals by our Group, and an important factor increasing CIECH’s competitiveness in the long term. The cooperation between CIECH, a representative of energy-intensive business of key importance for the Polish economy, and Synthos Green Energy, may result not only in accelerating the decarbonisation process of the domestic industry, but also in strengthening its position on the global market – says Dawid Jakubowicz, President of the Management Board of CIECH S.A.

- The first IV (fourth) generation reactor is to be launched in Canada in 2025, with the next units to be constructed in the USA. If the licensing process in Poland is carried out correctly, nothing will prevent the fourth generation reactors from being commissioned at CIECH plants by the end of the decade - says Rafał Kasprów, President of the Management Board of Synthos Green Energy.

Synthos Green Energy S.A. (SGE) conducts operations in the decarbonisation of the Polish industry and energy sector. The two key areas on which the Company concentrates its activities are projects related to the construction of offshore wind farms and nuclear energy.

The CIECH Group is implementing an ambitious decarbonisation plan as part of its ESG strategy goals: by 2026, it intends to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by approx. 33% (compared to 2019), and in 2033 – cease using coal in its energy production processes. Currently, coal-fired combined heat and power plants are operated in the Group's most energy-consuming sodium carbonate plants, i.e. Inowrocław and Janikowo. In the coming years, in its plant in Inowrocław, the Group is going to partially switch to the generation of thermal energy from natural gas. Thermal energy from natural gas is already obtained by CIECH in Stassfurt, Germany, where its soda and salt production plants are located. Additionally, in Poland, CIECH intends to obtain heat from thermal waste treatment installations, leveraging its cooperation with third-party partners.
