The CIECH Group and EEW with joint terms of cooperation in the preparation phase of the investment in a new energy source for the Inowrocław plant

CIECH S.A. and CIECH Soda Polska S.A. has signed an agreement with EEW Energy from Waste GmbH specifying the terms of their cooperation in the project involving construction of a thermal waste treatment installation in Inowrocław. The document defines the terms of cooperation in the investment preparation phase – this is the first of the three stages of the entire project implementation. The next two – construction and operationalisation of the new installation - will be defined in separate agreements to be signed in the future. The preparation phase assumes, among others, obtaining the necessary administrative decisions and permits, contracting works, as well as obtaining financing by EEW for the construction of the installation by December 2024.

The contracting parties agreed not to implement any other thermal waste conversion projects in Poland during the preparation phase. The executed agreement also provides for the possibility of its termination.

As part of the investment preparation, a “Project Environmental Impact Report” is being developed, which will be reviewed by institutions provided for in the law, and will also be the subject of public consultations.

The energy obtained from the planned installation is to partially replace that obtained from coal-fired boilers, thus reducing coal consumption by the Inowrocław production plant by approx. one third. In turn, this will improve the competitiveness of CIECH Soda Polska by reducing the head production expense and the amount of CO2 emissions. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is one of the goals of the Group's ESG Strategy in terms of the impact of the Group's operations on environmental protection. According to its assumptions, for instance, CIECH is to stop producing energy from coal by 2033.

The investment is to be financed by EEW, and CIECH Soda Polska will become the purchaser of energy generated by the thermal waste treatment installation.

A similar solution is already in place in the CIECH Group’s German soda plant, where heat from the thermal waste treatment installation finds its way to the CIECH Soda Deutschland production plant. In this manner, the German factory acquires approx. 30 percent of the energy needed for its production.

EEW is a European leader in the design, construction and operation of waste-to-energy installations. The company's first installations were built over 50 years ago, and EEW has successfully operated seventeen similar plants in Germany and neighbouring countries.
