Development of Boiler CKTI3 for adjustment of EC Janikowo to environmental protection requirements

Beneficiary: Soda Polska CIECH sp. z o.o.

Value of the project: PLN 35,095,000

Level of co-financing from the European Union: PLN 9,591,000

Soda Polska CIECH has obtained additional financing from the European Union funds. On May 29th, 2012, a co-financing agreement was signed between Soda Polska CIECH and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFEP&WM) regarding the project involving the:

"Development of CKTI3 Boiler for adjustment of EC Janikowo to environmental protection requirements".

The co-financing accounts for 30% of the project eligible costs and amounts to PLN 9,591,000.00 . The total value of the project amounts to PLN 35,095,000.00 (eligible costs PLN 31,970,000.00).

The project implementation was planned within the so called Comprehensive Modernisation of the Soda Polska CIECH Power Supply System at Zakład Produkcyjny Janikosoda in Janikowo" for the years of 2010-2012.

Soda Polska CIECH filed the application for co-financing in July 2010. The objective of the project is to improve the existing boiler parameters, mainly with regard to its energy efficiency and to develop the technical conditions for meeting the emission standards. The project's implementation will contribute to a reduction in the emission of fuel combustion gases, mainly CO2, NOx, CO, and SO2, fitting in the context of the strategic document entitled: Poland's Climate Policy – The strategies for greenhouse gas emission reductions in Poland until 2020. The strategic objective of this documents is to protect the global climate through the implementation of sustainable development principles, particularly in terms of improving energy consumption and the rational use of raw materials and products so as to achieve the maximum, long-term economic, social and political benefits.

The investment is an element of the Comprehensive Modernisation of the Power Supply System at Soda Polska CIECH, based on the extension of the existing CKTI-75 type Boiler no. 3 and its adjacent technological facilities at the Janikowo power plant, constituting at the same time a change in the manufacturing process by:

  • increasing the boiler's efficiency from 75 to 85 Mg steam/h, and thus increasing the production of the process heat, thereby achieving a high efficiency boiler and therefore, lower consumption of coal (reduction in the emission of pollutions to the air and the amount of wastes, i.e. the ash and slag mixture);
  • reducing the emissions of harmful substances (mainly CO2, NOx, CO, and SO2)
  • excluding potential boiler failures caused by its technical condition;
  • cutting down on the number of repairs carried out on the drum and furnace chambers in order to reduce the amount of post-repair solid waste.

The project was developed in response to the notice of competition organized by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management under Measure 4.5 Support for enterprises in the area of air protection of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme. The aim of financial support allocated under the aforementioned Measure is to improve air quality by reducing the amounts of pollution emitted by fuel combustion installations; the support is directed at entrepreneurs.

The fact that the project of Soda Polska CIECH was approved for co-financing by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, and at the same time, by the European Union to receive funds from the European Regional Development Fund, confirms that the implementation of the project will bring significant ecological effects, helping to improve air quality by significantly reducing pollutant emissions.
