CIECH continues to expand its Agro business in Romania

For years, CIECH has been consistently developing the strategy of foreign expansion of its businesses – including the Agro segment. Today, the Group is present with its plant protection product offer in more than 50 countries around the world, and one of its most important sales targets in this respect is Romania. After the successful, long-term export of PPPs to the local market, as the next step in the development of its Agro business in Romania, CIECH will establish a new company dedicated to the support of this business - CIECH Agro Romania. Its purpose will be to build a wide distribution network and provide Romanian farmers with products that ensure effective crop protection, especially the innovative BGT (“Better Glyphosate Technology”) technology, which is a response to the challenges related to sustainable agriculture and the European Green Deal.

The establishment of CIECH Agro Romania is yet another step towards the development of the Agro CIECH business in Romania. The strategic decision to expand into this promising market, taken several years ago, and its consistent implementation, enabled the Group to build solid foundations for further growth. Now the main goal of CIECH Agro Romania will be to adapt the Polish business model to the Romanian market. The newly formed team will be involved, among others, in building a distribution network among key wholesalers and numerical distribution in retail stores, as well as direct sales to large farms, along with agrotechnical consultancy from CIECH representatives.

- We have a very good understanding of the local market as CIECH has been present in the Romanian agricultural sector since 2017. Customers in Romania expect high-quality products, prices adjusted to the economics of production of the crops, and reliable logistics. All these criteria are met by CIECH, and given the optimistic experience and favourable perspectives for the development of agriculture in this country, the decision to establish CIECH Agro Romania was a natural path of development for us. The main business goal of the Company will be to further expand the Agro business of the CIECH Group and provide Romanian farmers with products ensuring effective protection of crops - including the particularly innovative BGT and a wide range of protection programmes for corn - says Wojciech Babski, President of the Management Board of CIECH Sarzyna and Head of the Agro business in the CIECH Group.

Currently, the portfolio of CIECH Agro Romania includes 16 products from the offer of CIECH Sarzyna and Proplan (a Spanish supplier of plant protection products owned by the CIECH Group), which will enable the Group to provide comprehensive herbicide and fungicide protection for key crops in Romania, such as corn and grain crops. A wide range of effective agents dedicated to corn will allow for the creation of various programmes for its protection, depending on the weed infestation or the time of application. An important competitive advantage of CIECH will be products based on the active substance MCPA, produced at CIECH Sarzyna, one of the most modern and largest installations of this type in the world.

Romanian farmers will obtain access to leading product brands from the CIECH portfolio, such as: Terbustar (active ingredient: terbuthylazine), Nikosar (nikosurfulon), Azoksar (azoxystrobin), Haksar (MCPA) and Fenuxar (Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl). Available products also include those for the protection of grapevine - Siarkol (active ingredient: sulphur) – and rapeseed, including Labrador Extra (Chizalofop-P-ethyl) and Faworyt (Chlopyralid).

Another important element in the offer of CIECH Agro Romania will be Halvetic – a new glyphosate herbicide, based on the innovative and patented BGT technology (“Better Glyphosate Technology”), which allows you to maintain the current effectiveness of the active substance, while reducing its dose per hectare by half compared to existing standards. It is a breakthrough on the global market of glyphosate formulations, and at the same time, the CIECH Group's response to the challenges related to the transformation of agriculture towards a more sustainable one.

Romania is one of the most important producers of agricultural crops in the European Union, and the area of arable land in this country is 13.4 million hectares, which is slightly smaller than agricultural land in Poland. Romania is the seventh largest producer of cereals and oilseeds in the EU, and the largest producer of corn and sunflower seeds. Due to the significant position of agriculture in the country's economy, the local market of plant protection products is developing dynamically - in recent years it has exceeded the value of EUR 600 million, thus doubling its size within 10 years. In the following years, the development of the Romanian market of PPPs is estimated at 4 to 6 percent, despite the challenges related to the European Green Deal. In recent years, Romanian agriculture has undergone the stage of farm modernisation and consolidation, as a result of which today nearly half of the agricultural land belongs to farms with a size of more than 100 hectares. Romania also has the largest farm in the EU, with an area of 57 thousand hectares.

The CIECH Group is present with its offer of plant protection products in approx. 50 countries around the globe. CIECH Sarzyna, the largest Polish manufacturer of PPPs, supplies its products to about 40 foreign markets – in addition to the domestic market, it also supports the regions of Central and Western Europe, the British Isles and Scandinavia. Outside Europe, traditionally important markets for CIECH include Australia, Canada and the Far East, especially Thailand and Vietnam. Moreover, Proplan, acquired in 2018, operates mainly in the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean (Italy, France & Greece) and North Africa – predominantly in Morocco, Algeria and Egypt.

The registered office of CIECH Agro Romania will be located in Bucharest.
