First batch of test salt manufactured at the Stassfurt Plant

Upon completion of the main construction work at the new CIECH evaporated salt plant in Stassfurt, Germany, the new factory was officially put into commissioning. On 21 May, after the assembly of the technology had been verified, a test batch of wet salt was produced meeting the assumed physicochemical parameters. For the new factory, wet salt is the core product, which is the basis for the production of dry salt with different applications, as well as salt tablets for water treatment. In the coming weeks, the commissioning phase will be carried out, involving verification of the correct operation of individual elements of the production line and production of test batches, including among others, salt tablets. As per schedule, this phase is expected to end by the end of the second quarter.

After the commissioning phase is completed, the stage of gradual production increase will begin, which will consist in attaining the assumed performance parameters of the plant – this stage will end, according to the current schedule, by the end of September 2021.

In the coming weeks, finishing works will be performed on the factory site and the final stages of work on the construction of a modern high-stack warehouse will be carried out, without any effect of such work on the production process.

After the test batch of dry salt is produced, it will be possible to check the installation for the production of salt tablets, which will be the basic element of the portfolio of the Stassfurt plant (more than half of the annual production capacity, at the level of 450 thousand tonnes of dry salt). This product will be offered on markets with the greatest potential: including, among others, Germany, France or Italy.

As far as table salt is concerned, after obtaining the necessary certification (which is scheduled to occur at the beginning of the third quarter of 2021), production from Stassfurt will be targeted at Western European markets.

Later, in the second half of the year, pharmaceutical-grade salt will also be produced in Stassfurt. The potential recipients of this product include manufacturers from the pharmaceutical sector, also interested in sodium bicarbonate from the soda factory adjacent to the evaporated salt plant.

After reaching the target value of the annual production of the new salt plant based on its own brine resources, the CIECH Group will be among the largest European manufacturers of evaporated salt (3rd largest supplier in Europe) with an established position in Central Europe and Scandinavia, and with the prospect of dynamic expansion into Western European markets. The plant will employ over 100 people and will operate on a continuous basis. The value of the investment in the German salt factory is EUR 140 million, which makes the construction of the salt plant the largest investment in the chemical history of the Group and strengthens the position of CIECH on the list of the largest Polish private investors abroad.
